Another season is over and for most Premier League players it is a time to relax, unwind and head off on a dream holiday.

For other experienced top-flight stars, like Manchester United forward Javier Hernandez and Tottenham Hotspur winger Aaron Lennon, it is a time of deep uncertainty.

Sent out on loan, they are back at their respective clubs unsure what the future holds. So what next for football's 'nowhere men'?

Here, BBC Sport takes a look at some of the most high-profile names who don't know where they will be playing when the 2015-16 campaign starts in nine weeks' time.

Tom Cleverley - Manchester United (contract expires this summer)

What a roller-coaster season for 25-year-old Tom Cleverley.

The midfielder was made captain on Manchester United's pre-season tour of the United States before he was advised to find another club by Louis van Gaal after just one Premier League outing, a 1-1 draw at Sunderland on 24 August.

On a chaotic final day of last summer's transfer deadline, Cleverley, veteran of 13 England caps, almost joined Everton before the Toffees pulled out for financial reasons, the Premier League board rubber-stamping his move to Aston Villa after a deal was struck close to the deadline.

He played a key role in Villa's run to the FA Cup final but, with Cleverley having conceded his career at Old Trafford is over,external-link will Tim Sherwood sign him permanently?

What he said: "I don't think any Premier League players are going to be short of a quid or two so I think you've just got to be happy first and foremost and I am at Aston Villa so let's just see where we go from there."external-link

Paper talk: Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood will attempt to convince Cleverley to make his loan move from Manchester United permanent, although Villa could face competition for the midfielder from Everton. (Guardian)external-link

Opta stat: Tom Cleverley scored three goals in his last five league games for Aston Villa, after failing to score in his first 26 for the club.

Javier Hernandez - Manchester United (contract expires in the summer of 2016)

Having secured two Premier League title medals at Manchester United, Javier Hernandez added the 2014 Fifa Club World Cup to his personal haul after joining Real Madrid on loan.

But the 27-year-old Mexico forward could not help Carlo Ancelotti's side win La Liga or the Champions League and now finds himself back at Old Trafford wondering what the future holds.

Javier Hernandez

With United manager Louis van Gaal in the market for a forward to aid Wayne Rooney, can 'Little Pea' resurrect his Premier League career with the Red Devils?

The player's options appear limited. Orlando City had been keen to recruit him for the MLS,external-link but Hernandez is understood to want to remain in Europe, at a major club.

What he said: "Only God knows where I will be this time next year.external-link I love playing football and it's what makes me feel good. What I've learned is that being a success is down to me and I need to continue working hard."

Paper talk: Manchester United are ready to use Javier Hernandez as bait to lure their top targets to Old Trafford this summer. He still has a year left on the five-year deal at Old Trafford, which he signed in 2011. But he's not part of Louis van Gaal's plans and will be allowed to leave this summer. Aaron Lennon - Tottenham Hotspur (contract expires in the summer of 2016)

Aaron Lennon started the season helping Tottenham win at West Ham and ended it helping Everton to an away win at... West Ham.

But the 28-year-old winger faces an uncertain future, with Everton manager Roberto Martinez side-stepping questions about whether he will sign the England international.

Lennon was one of Everton's more impressive performers during the second half of the season after joining on the final day of the winter transfer window.

Reports have linked Lennon with a swap deal with Toffees' forward Kevin Mirallas,external-link with the Belgium international's future at Goodison uncertain after he declared in February that he was looking for a new challenge.

But will Lennon get the move to Merseyside he appears to want?

What he said: "I've loved it from the first moment I arrived here at Everton. Everyone has been brilliant, I've settled in and it's been great to get some football as well."

Opta stat: Everton's win rate in the Premier League was 43% with Aaron Lennon in the team, compared with 25% without him.

Joel Campbell - Arsenal (signed a new long-term contract in January)

Joel Campbell is still waiting to make his first Premier League start for Arsenal and has just returned from the fourth loan spell of his Gunners career.

Despite scoring for Costa Rica against Uruguay at last summer's World Cup, the 22-year-old was farmed out to Villarreal in La Liga during the winter transfer window after four top-flight substitute appearances for Arsene Wenger's side.

"I believe that here, things are a bit obstructed for him, because there are too many players in the same position," said Wenger at the time.

Having signed a new "long-term" contract with Arsenalexternal-link before making his temporary move to Spain, Campbell will be hoping that 2015-16 is the season he finally makes an impact at the Emirates.

What he said: "The Spanish league is a top one and Villarreal have a great game style and I hope to have the opportunity to demonstrate what I know. It is a pleasureexternal-link to play with them."

Paper talk: According to reports in Turkey, Arsenal forward Joel Campbell is on the verge of completing a move to Fenerbahce. It is unsure how much the striker would cost, but with Arsene Wenger looking to further strengthen his attacking options this summer, there may be no place for Campbell. (Shoot)external-link

Opta stat: Joel Campbell scored just one goal in 16 La Liga appearances for Villarreal.

Yaya Sanogo - Arsenal (contract expires summer of 2017)

France Under-21 forward Yaya Sanogo scored for Arsenal in a Champions League group game against Borussia Dortmund in November.

But the 22-year-old went on to make just one more appearance for the Gunners before being sent to Premier League rivals Crystal Palace during the winter transfer window.

Sanogo failed to score at Selhurst Park but Palace manager Alan Pardew has spoken of his desire to signexternal-link the former Auxerre player permanently.

But will Wenger allow the talented Under-20 World Cup winner, who has made two top-flight starts in two years at the Emirates, to move across London? Or will he keep Sanogo and send him out on loan again?

What he said: "When the Arsenal manager spoke with meexternal-link about Crystal Palace I was very happy because I want to play more games."

Paper talk: Diego Costa's failure to score in Chelsea's Champions League campaign during 2014-15 has been put into stark contrast by a new statistic comparing his goalscoring record to Arsenal's Yaya Sanogo. Sanogo has netted once in two appearances for the Gunners - during Arsenal's 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in November - which puts into contrast Costa's struggles in the Champions League this season. Opta stat: Yaya Sanogo made just three Premier League starts for Palace.

Mauro Zarate - West Ham United (contract expires summer of 2017)

"Hopefully he is going to settle in quickly and bring us those sort of options that we need to be more successful in terms of goalscoring," said Sam Allardyce when West Ham signed Mauro Zarate last year.

Allardyce has gone and Argentine forward Zarate has yet to prove himself.

It had all started so promisingly for the 28-year-old, who scored on his Hammers debut. But the former Lazio player could only add one more before being sent to struggling QPR on loan in January.

But Zarate is back at Upton Park having failed to make a start for the relegated Hoops amid claims he stormed offexternal-link after failing to make the squad for a game at Liverpool.

What he said: "The Premier League is the best in the world at this moment. Does my style suit the Premier League? Maybe. We will see."external-link

Paper talk: QPR tried to send the former Lazio forward back to their Premier League rivals just weeks after bringing him in due to his poor fitness levels. However, their plan was scuppered by red tape and they were forced to keep him for the remainder of the season. (Daily Mirror)external-link

Opta stat: Mauro Zarate made just four substitute appearances for QPR, failing to score.

Darren Bent - Aston Villa (contract expires this summer)

Darren Bent, who cost Aston Villa £18m in January 2011, can be forgiven for not knowing if he was coming or going during 2014-15, playing for three clubs in two divisions.

Having failed to score in eight league and cup appearances for Villa, the former England striker dropped down to the Championship to Brighton for one month.

The 31-year-old returned to Villa Park before heading back to the Championship and Derby County.

Bent flourished under Rams boss Steve McClaren scoring 12 league and cup goals in 17 matches. Can he force his way into Tim Sherwood's plans at Villa? Or will Bent be packing his bags again?

What he said: "There have been conversations with Villaexternal-link regarding the future and I need to have a think about things in the summer. I'm not ruling out going back, just like I wouldn't rule out staying at Derby because they have given me a lifeline to play football and score goals again."

Paper talk: Striker Darren Bent is expected to be Derby County's first signing ahead of next season. The Rams are confident they can land the 31-year-old former England international, who is out of contract at Villa this summer. (Derby Telegraph)external-link

Opta stat: Darren Bent scored 10 goals in 15 Championship games for Derby this season.

Michu - Swansea City (contract expires summer of 2016)

Michu was valued at £30m last season but, without a goal since October 2013, Swansea City's once-prolific forward has hit a low after an underwhelming loan at Napoli.

A revelation in his first campaign with the Swans, injuries and inaction have seen the Spaniard slide into relative obscurity.

Should Swans boss Garry Monk convince the club's former top-scorer to stay at the Liberty Stadium? Or should the Swans offload a 29-year-old with one year left on his contract and a dwindling transfer value?

"I talked to him very well in the summer, saw he wanted to go and I was fine with that, so it will be the same sort of situation come this summer," said Monk.

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins: "His future is pretty much in the balance, he's got one year left with us on a contract. My feeling is it'll be unlikely he'll be back working with us, but I'm still waiting for a chance to meet with Michu and his agents on how they want to proceed." (BBC)

Opta stat: Michu made just three league appearances for Napoli in 2014-15, failing to score.
