Chris Wood: Burnley sign Leeds United striker for club record fee

Chris Wood, who was top scorer in the Championship last season, has signed a four-year deal with Burnley

Burnley have signed striker Chris Wood from Leeds United for a club record transfer fee, thought to be about £15m.

The 25-year-old scored 44 goals in 88 appearances after joining the Championship side from Leicester City in July 2015.

The New Zealand international ruled himself out of Leeds' match against Sunderland on Saturday amid speculation about his future.

Wood, who is Sean Dyche's sixth summer signing, joins on a four-year deal.

He has found the net once in three appearances for Leeds this season, but said he is now relishing his chance in the Premier League.

"I've had tastes of being in there but I've never had the chance to give it a proper bash," said the former West Brom youngster. "Coming here I feel I've got a proper opportunity to do that. I've never started a Premier League game and this is what I want to do.

"This is a club that wants to stay in the Premier League for years to come and it's going that way."

Wood is eligible to play for Burnley in the EFL Cup after being an unused substitute in Leeds' opening-round win over Port Vale and will be available for Wednesday's second-round derby at Blackburn.

Burnley's previous record signing was January recruit Robbie Brady, whose fee could reach £13m.

    As a Leeds fan, sad to see Wood leave, good season last year, and you cant blame him for wanting to play in the premiership. Still get shocked by how many premiership clubs try to solve striker problems by sourcing championship strikers unproven at the top level. £15m seems a lot too for a club like Burnley to gamble with. Good business for Leeds, best of Luck to Chris, you've earned your shot.

    £15m for a championship-level striker does not seem like the best deal to me, especially for a team that may be fighting for survival this season. Javier Hernandez was the same price.

    McCormack, Becchio, Cook, Snodgrass, Byram and Taylor all left for more money and all fell away after leaving Leeds. Good luck to Wood, but he'll be in the same bracket as those I believe.

    As soon as it was clear he'd had his head turned we had to cash in. Good business by Radz to get £15m for him. TC looks to be developing a squad which doesn't depend anywhere near as much on Wood as we did last season so I'll take this deal - especially if the money goes towards a replacement.

    Good luck to Chris Wood. A really good player for LUFC but nobody is bigger than the club.

    Brilliant to get a HYS on Leeds. They have bought some really decent players and looked good against Sunderland. They will be fine without Woody and have now more than one player to target up front.

    Woods is a good striker at Championship level but who knows how he'll do in the Prem. A bit of a strange one as I think in many regards he is similar to Vokes.

    Interesting to read the Leeds fan's comments about Wood's abilities, although I hope we can develop his game in the same way as we have with other strikers. However, I think they are wrong to poke fun at little old Burnley, as we have shown just how a club should be managed, which I have to say is not something you can say about LUFC...

    Elland Road was bought from the landlord earlier this season at £20 million.
    Chris Wood is a good goal scorer- but players come and go whereas the ground can be ours forever

    Interesting how none of Burnley's 3 premier league goals this season have come from hoofball and yet both Chelsea and WBA relied on hoofball against Burnley. When Chelsea play Hoofball it's genius of course.

    As a LUFC fan, I find this an odd signing tbh. I'll probably be called bitter by Burnley fans but whatever. I don't see how he's anything different to Vokes or Walters in the style of play and to the get the best out of him, you have to make it all about him and sideline other players, which I don't see happening at Burnley. 1/2

    I guess 'Pep Guardiola' is the Blackburn troll Burnley fans have so much trouble with in the Lancashire Telegraph despite him claiming to be a City fan. Sounds just like him. The jealous 'No Dads' get everywhere.

    I can understand the Leeds fans being bitter about losing their goalscorer but some of their comments are funny. Great signing for Burnley whether he's their first choice striker or not. £15 million is peanuts to a PL club and all he'd have to do is nick them the odd 1-0 win and he's more than paid for himself. Relegation from the PL is pretty costly these days. I think he'll do well.

    As a Leeds fan I'm disappointed that he's gone, he was our top scorer during our best season for a lot of years and despite a lot of new signings he'll be missed. I really can't blame him though, any player would jump at the chance of a huge pay rise and a place in the premier league, at least we have sold him at his peak for a decent price.

    Good signing IMO. He has come on leaps and bounds in the last two seasons. Very good in the air & great at holding the ball up & bringing others in to play. Wishing Burnley & Chris a fruitful season ahead!

    Great signing. Really pleased. Gives us another attacking option. Why would a lower order Prem club not buy last year's Championship top scorer? Perfect logic - natural progression. As for the Leeds - yes, you have more fans. Congratulations. We don't dine out on the size of our fan base, we're a smaller club witha proud tradition and a positive future, based on realistic targets and management.

    Good signing. Decent striker and will chip in with a decent goal tally. Great for NZ football aswell to have another player in the prem along with Winston Reid, will surely raise the profile of burnley and football in NZ
