West Bromwich Albion 1-2 Manchester City

Leroy Sane has now scored four goals for Manchester City this season

Leroy Sane scored twice as Manchester City beat West Brom in the third round of the Carabao Cup in a match that saw Ilkay Gundogan limp off in his first start since December.

Gundogan, who has missed most of the past nine months after damaging ligaments in his knee, was substituted in the second half following a late tackle from Claudio Yacob, the scorer of West Brom's goal at the Hawthorns.

However, City boss Pep Guardiola said after the game that the midfielder has a "small issue" with his knee but that it "does not look serious".

"It's not eight months, but a little injury," added Guardiola. "Unfortunately the action is tough. He will be back soon hopefully.

"Tomorrow we will make a test. The physio and doctor told me it's not big issue.

"I'll have to review [Yacob's tackle]. It's from behind but I don't know if he touched the ball or not. I didn't see the image. Fortunately Gundogan is coming back soon.

"I suffer for him. He was on the grass and at that moment you think the wrong situation. You can't imagine, for eight months, to be fighting every day alone."

Prior to leaving the field, Gundogan had put in a tidy display, and it was his saved shot which fellow German Sane followed up to side-foot City in front.

Having scored 15 goals in their past three games, there would have been fears among the Baggies support of another big scoreline in favour of the still unbeaten City, but this did not materialise.

This is largely down to home keeper Ben Foster, who produced a string of saves to keep the visitors at bay, palming away a header from Eliaquim Mangala following a short corner and twice denying shots from Raheem Sterling.

Gabriel Jesus spurned another good opportunity, firing over from inside the box.

This kept Albion within touching distance, which they capitalised on when Yacob fired past Claudio Bravo in the 72nd minute.

But five minutes later, Sane struck again, this time decisively courtesy of a superb left-footed finish in a counter-attacking move that began straight after Bravo had saved well from James Morrison.

Robson-Kanu could, and probably should have taken the game to an extra 30 minutes, but after pulling one shot wide he struck the outside of the upright with just the keeper to beat in added time.

City will now face Championship side Wolves in a fourth-round home tie.
