Mauricio Pochettino says Harry Kane has 'something special'

Tottenham's Harry Kane can become the club's "greatest striker", says White Hart Lane legend Glenn Hoddle.

Kane scored a hat-trick as Spurs beat Apoel Nicosia to maintain their 100% Champions League record this season.

The England international, 24, has now scored six trebles in 2017 and 11 goals in seven games this month.

When Kane was asked about Hoddle's comments, made on BT Sport, he said: "It's great praise. I've just got to keep doing what I'm doing."

Kane hits hat-trick as Spurs beat Apoel

Midfielder Hoddle played 490 times for Spurs between 1975 and 1987, scoring 110 goals, before returning to the club as manager in 2001.

Kane is 14th in Tottenham's all-time list with 108 goals in 173 games, 158 behind the club's record scorer Jimmy Greaves.

Bobby Smith (208) is the only other player to score more than 200 goals for the north London club, while Martin Chivers' 174 goals between 1968 and 1976 places him third on the list.

Jermain Defoe, Teddy Sheringham and Robbie Keane are all ahead of Kane, but he has passed the totals of other big names - such as former England striker Gary Lineker and German World Cup winner Jurgen Klinsmann.

Kane made his Tottenham debut in 2011 and has scored at least 20 goals in each of the past three Premier League seasons, including 29 goals in 30 games last term.

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino, who joked earlier this week that he was "in love" with Kane, said after Tuesday's hat-trick that the striker has "unbelievable skills" in front of goal.

"He is something special - a killer. It is a special skill," the Argentine added.

'Good enough for Barcelona or Real'

"Harry Kane is absolutely remarkable. The past two or three years he has been phenomenal.

"Sergio Aguero is a terrific striker, Alvaro Morata is on fire, Romelu Lukaku has power and strength - but at this moment in time I would go with Harry Kane over them all.

"He is good enough to play with Real Madrid and Barcelona, but I'm not sure he looks like their type of centre-forward.

"Barcelona don't really play with an out-and-out centre-forward, they like to play down the channels and Real Madrid are similar.

"Kane is like an old-fashioned centre-forward and is a wonderful talent."

'He is incredible'

Tottenham defender Ben Davies, who was shrugged off the ball by Kane in the build-up to his third goal in Cyprus, said the striker's scoring prowess is not being taken for granted in the dressing room.

"We don't know what else to say about him at the moment. All the boys appreciate him," said the 24-year-old Wales left-back.

"He is just incredible. He needs just one chance, or even just one half-chance, to produce a bit of magic and score.

"As a defender it is brilliant when you have a striker like that in your team."

Hoddle is knowledgeable and for an English player quite articulate. His purpose is to say that if Kane stays for 10 years or so at Spurs then he can become the greatest Spurs striker of all time. He is almost encouraging Kane to stay. But Kane always shows maturity beyond his years and seems to be very loyal. Lesser men would have engineered a transfer to Man city long time ago.

Maybe he will get to the level of Jimmy Greaves and maybe he won't. But it's not his scoring ability that impresses me most. It's his attitude. The way he behaves, carries himself, his work rate and his industry. Not too many role models out there but Harry is definitely one of them.

As has been said about Kane before, it's his accuracy in finding the corner of the net, just inside the post, that is unerring. A superb striker & we (Scotland) nearly stole an undeserved win v England, but up popped the man to do what he does best. He seems to be very level headed & mature for his age, so i think he will go on to break all sorts of records in the future .. & good luck to him.

Dortmund, Chelsea, Arsenal, Man Utd, Man City, West Ham, Everton and Liverpool, have made it easy for Harry to score. Don't think he has scored against the mighty MK Dons

Don't agree that he's underrated because he's English. He is a quality player. He just seems happy where he is so doesn't produce a string of articles linking him with other clubs. Seems to me that's good for him and good for Spurs.

Please don't abuse your golden goose again! Real cheated you on Modric and Bale but will now also want Kane and Dele. Kane is the cornerstone to the first "English" side to be competitive in Europe for a generation. Penny wise, Pound stupid makes no sense now as this is your last chance to build an internationally competitive largely English team and global franchise. COYS!

Well at least there is one English player worth talking about and is genuinely World Class, he seems to be getting better and better as well. I also like the fact he bucks the trend for footballers these days, it's not all about the physicals, he's not massive, he's not super quick but has technique and football brain, if only the likes of Sterling had half his technique and football brain.

I never like these "greatest ever" comparisons. Different era and in a lot of ways a different game. Harry Kane is an excellent player who is improving (which is a scary thought) All the best to him he seems to have a very good attitude aswell.

Credit to his manager who gave him the opportunity and is clearly helping him develop.

If he was a foreign player there would be a lot more hype for example mbappe, kane is still for some reason so underrated start of every season its all about aguero, sanchez, jesus I am not a spurs fan but kane is world class in my opinion

No chance. Jimmy Greaves is England's greatest ever striker by a mile in my view, and that's from a Scot. I can still visualise him in his pomp.

People on here saying he doesn't do it for England. All good strikers need good service. He doesn't get good service playing for England.

Heard on the Totally Football Show podcast - Kane is in a scoring contest with West Ham for the calendar year 2017. West Ham are currently edging it 35 to 31, but I'm backing Kane to overhaul the Hammers if both his and their respective forms continue!

@75. Unless he joins a big club, a team that competes at the highest level.

You are right, he should play for a club that plays at the top end of the premier league and also plays against team like Madrid and Dortmund in the champions league. Oh, hang on a minute !!!

Not a Spurs fan but i think hes got it all and i'm sure he will lead the line for England for many years.

Hatrick from Kane last night & no Ali or Eriksen in the team so it does not matter who he has around him pretty impressive. Greaves record makes him the greatest British Number 9 in history maybe the best 9 world football has ever seen so Harry will have to go some to top that as people have said that 44 in 57 at international level is some going. But Kane is a very special player.

Hate it when people try to compare players from different eras, it was a different game when Greaves played, even the rules are slightly different! Can't we just enjoy these player's talents without the need for pointless comparisons.

The idea you're only considered 'great' playing for Barca or Madrid is a joke. Shearer, Le Tissier & Totti weren't considered any less than world class. Being a great player, and a successful player are not the same thing.
