Alvaro Morata has denied he dislikes living in London, saying he would "probably" sign a 10-year deal at Chelsea if he could.

The striker had told a newspaper in Italyexternal-link he did not see himself living in London "for very long".

Asked about the quotes before Tuesday's Champions League game at Roma, he clarified he meant he will not remain in London when he retires.

"I'm really happy here and enjoying London with my wife," he said.

"When I finish my career, I prefer to come back to my country. I prefer the place where I was born, that's normal. When I say London is a stressful city, I'm talking about the traffic and a lot of people. It's an incredible city."

Morata, 25, has scored seven goals in 13 games since his club record £60m move from hometown club Real Madrid on a five-year deal in the summer.

"If Chelsea proposed 10 years, I'd probably sign it," he said. "I'm happy with everything. If I make good and improve, I can stay here more than five years."

    It's reported as if a foreigner disliking London traffic is something we should take offence at. I'm English and I hate London traffic. What a non-story.

    The non story about Morata is part of the media agenda about Chelsea this year ( they would do the same about any other reigning champions) Distort comments ( Daily Mail) invent stuff (Sun, Telegraph, Times) and spread it ( BBC,Sky) Chelsea players should just blank the media and Chelsea should ignore the media and do contractual minimum. Antonio, Alvaro please remember English media are scum!

    This story is immensely gratifying.

    All those London-based journos, broadcasters and commentators who spend their time maliciously slagging off other parts of the country will just hate reading criticism of their precious city.

    Despite all the public funding that's tipped into London's infrastructure at the expense of everywhere else - still cultured foreigners struggle to love the place.

    I speak Italian and have just read the article. This is a load of fuss over nothing. He said he's very happy in London (and at Chelsea), but that he's not sure that he'd stay here indefinitely; just that he sees himself returning to southern Europe eventually.
    Our press are such a bunch of wind up merchants..

    I'm a Londoner. After 21 years working in the West End, I got out as soon as I could to the Berkshire countryside. London is ok to visit for a day out, but would never return to live there. I've seen the light!

    49. Same, lived here for 6 of my last 9 years, pretty sick of it. It smells bad, everything costs a fortune and the people are unfriendly. It makes you feel sad to be English when the foreigners make it a friendlier place than the natives.

    Well.. when I say natives, I mean all the upper middle class snobs who have pushed the actual native Londoners out of the city. Yeah you too bbc journalists.

    Any chance of some real news? Poor bloke has only been in the country 20 minutes and the 2nd rate hacks are writing garbage already. I appreciate they are missing Costa and have nothing newsworthy of note. Morata is a top striker, shame the hacks writing rubbish aren’t of the same calibre!!
