Pochettino: today is my favorite memory of White Hart Lane

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino was effusive with praise for his team after Spurs ran out to a 2-1 victory over Manchester United in the last ever match at White Hart Lane. The Argentine manager was pleased with his side’s performance, and the win clinched second place in the Premier League table behind champions Chelsea.

“I think it was a very emotional game and emotional ceremony. It's so difficult to speak about it and to describe it. I think I am very lucky guy because to share the history of such a club in that special moment is so lucky to be here.

“I am so happy. I want to congratulate all and to say thank you to all the players, the fans, the staff and my staff. Because all together we worked so hard together to achieve all that we have achieved this season.

“I'm really sad, disappointed, because Chelsea in the end won the Premier League but there is nothing to regret. Im very, very happy with the performance of all the players. For now it is to say to the fans and everyone that we will give our best and try to fight again next season to try to win the league.”

There was some concern that this Spurs team, after a disappointing match against West Ham last weekend, might slide in the same way that they did at the tail end of last year’s title challenge against Leicester. But the final match at the Lane, with all the energy, enthusiasm, and emotions, were more than enough to motivate Spurs to close their stadium on the highest of notes.

And they certainly did. Spurs got goals from Victor Wanyama and Harry Kane, and held on late after Wayne Rooney halved their lead for the win. The match was concluded by an extremely emotional farewell service that ended with a song, confetti, and a rainbow.

All of that, said Pochettino, contributed to this day being the one that he’ll remember the most from his three years at White Hart Lane.

“Now [my fondest memory] will always be the last day. For me, it was a very exciting day. It was perfect. the preparation of the game, the game -- we played well, got three points and then at the end the ceremony was perfect to share with the people, the staff, the fans, was perfect. For me the most special day will be the last day at White Hart Lane.”
