Tottenham U21s drop wild 4-3 match to Wimbledon in Checkatrade Trophy

We haven’t... uh, “checked” in on the Checkatrade Trophy much this fall, and it’s time. Tottenham’s U21 squad played a wild match against AFC Wimbledon’s senior squad yesterday, dropping a 4-3 thriller. Spurs got goals from Shilow Tracey, Samuel Shashoua, and Kazaiah Sterling, but despite hanging with a mostly full-strength League One side, the Baby Spurs lost in the 90th minute after another former Spurs player and academy grad, Dean Parrett, headed home the winner.

Here are some highlights from the action:

Midfielder Keanan Bennetts played out of position at left back for this match and had by all indications an exceptional match, with two assists for Spurs’ last two goals. You can see in the highlights his strength on the ball, his ability to take on defenders, and his passing ability as he found Shashoua and Sterling open in the box.

According to Twitter observers who watched the match in person, Oliver Skipp, a 17 year old highly rated midfielder now playing with the U23s, also had a fine match though he’s barely seen in the highlights.

Spurs are currently third in the Southern Group F with one point from two matches after drawing Luton Town in their first match. Wimbledon lead the group with two wins in two.

Formerly called the EFL (or Johnstone Paint) Trophy, the Checkatrade Trophy is a knock-out tournament that features clubs from League One and Two. Two years ago, it changed formats to have a group stage component and also now includes select invited Premier League U21 sides. Spurs are participating in the competition for the first time this season.
