England are going to the World Cup in Russia next summer!
Gareth Southgate’s squad needed a result either today against Slovenia or against Lithuania on October 8 in order to book their flight to Russia for the world’s biggest football competition, but for a long time it looked like the best they might achieve would be a scoreless draw.
But then Harry Kane stepped up in the 94th minute. Cometh the man, cometh the goal.

It’s a little hard to see in this video, but that’s former Tottenham Hotspur right back Kyle Walker with a lovely ball to the feet of Kane for him to poke home. That was enough, as England defeated Slovenia 1-0 to ensure they finish on top of the group.
And nobody got injured! Extra bonus hooray!
Hilariously, Scotland defeated Slovakia today 1-0 as well (off of a Martin Skrtl own goal) meaning they are now second in the group behind England and can qualify for the second-placed playoffs with a win at Slovenia on Sunday.
Alas, Harry Winks didn’t see the pitch for his first ever full England cap, but there’s a chance he might be a sub against Lithuania in a few days.
