Tottenham set for cash windfall if Sigurdsson sold to Everton

Swansea City will probably end up selling Gylfi Sigurdsson to Everton this summer, and for an absurd amount of money. Thanks to the Times of London, we now also know that this sale will also give Tottenham Hotspur a bit of a financial windfall.

Gylfi, a former Tottenham player, was sold to Swansea in 2014 just after Mauricio Pochettino was appointed manager as part of the deal that brought Michel Vorm and Ben Davies to the club. As part of the sale, Daniel Levy included a 10% sell-on clause into his contract. That means if Sigurdsson ends up being sold to the Toffees for Swansea’s staggering £50m asking price, Spurs are set make £5m. Not bad!

Slightly marginalized by the end at Tottenham, Sigurdsson had a career renaissance in Wales, Siggy has scored 37 goals and tallied 30 assists, with a number of them coming from dead-ball and set piece situations. He’s been really, really good for the Swans.

Pochettino said a few months back that he never really had time to evaluate Gylfi before then-director of football Franco Baldini sold him, and that he would’ve been “a perfect player” in his system. While Siggy probably wouldn’t be a starter on this Spurs team — it’s hard to see him taking minutes in the hole away from Dele — he’d be excellent depth and would be at worst a rotation player and an impact substitute.

Spurs are no doubt pleased by whatever money they stand to make by Sigurdsson’s success. Now if only they weren’t going to just give that money straight to Everton for Ross Barkley...
