Tottenham Hotspur are in Cyprus today for their second match of Group H in the 2017 UEFA Champions League. They are at the home of APOEL Nicosia, the Cypriot League champions, but a club that has not had much luck in Europe’s most prestigious competition. Still, they are hosting a Spurs side that is without six of its best players due to injury and suspension, and are hoping they can turn that plus a home pitch advantage into a result.

Spurs must win today without several key pieces.

Take a look at APOEL’s roster and you probably won’t find anyone you recognize. Most of their squad is made of international players with a lot of Brazilians and Spaniards, and many are on the wrong side of 30. This is a team that, under most circumstances, Spurs should have no problems beating.

But these are not most circumstances. It’s an away match, for starters, and even when the team isn’t great you never take a Champions League match in Cyprus for granted. Also, Spurs are without seven of their best players: Danny Rose, Erik Lamela, Mousa Dembele, Victor Wanyama are injured, Christian Eriksen is sick, while Jan Vertonghen and Dele Alli are suspended. It’s left Pochettino with a short-handed squad and a tactical dilemma for a match that Spurs must win if they are to maximize their chances of escaping Group H along with Real Madrid.

It’s enough to make a Spurs fan nervous, for sure. Pochettino may opt to fit some square pegs in round holes, or he could look down his bench and allow some younger players to try and step up. With Dortmund hosting Real Madrid, returning to London with six points from two games would be huge as Spurs prepare for back-to-back Champions League matches against the two time defending champions of Europe.

It’s a tricky tie. It may not be pretty. Hopefully it won’t matter.
