The last time Tottenham Hotspur faced Huddersfield Town was just over 45 years ago on 6 September, 1972. Tottenham hosted the Terriers in the League Cup and won 2-1, behind goals from Martin Chivers and Alan Gilzean. A lot’s happened since then. Tottenham have become title contenders, and Huddersfield have worked their way up the pyramid to join the Premier League for the first time ever. Now, the Terriers have the chance to get a historic result at their home stadium in their first Premier League match against a “top six” club.

The calm before the storm.

It’s been a pretty good week for Tottenham Hotspur, though one that has seemed to stretch the side a bit. First, Spurs were able to hang on and gut out a 3-2 win at West Ham while down a man, then took a hugely rotated side to Cyprus and won a flattering (but still emphatic) 3-1 Champions League match against APOEL.

But this match might be the last “breather” before the real work begins. After Huddersfield and the international break, Spurs begin a stretch of matches that includes Bournemouth, two matches against Real Madrid, Liverpool, West Ham, and a trip to Old Trafford. Today, Spurs will make do without the suspended Serge Aurier and the injured Mousa Dembele, but Jan Vertonghen will slot back into defense, and Christian Eriksen should be back in the frame after missing the midweek match against APOEL.

Not that Huddersfield are going to roll over! Under German-American manager David Wagner, who seems destined for greater things, the Terriers will likely stay compact and organized at the back, but will press Spurs in the midfield and look to counter through Aaron Mooy and Steve Mounié. On paper Tottenham should have enough talent and energy in the tank to handle whatever the Terriers throw at them, but strange things can happen to big teams against motivated, recently promoted sides. Huddersfield is a lot of fun to watch and I quite enjoy them. Just not today!
