Man United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will be handed a bumper transfer war-chest in excess of £50m as the Scot looks to improve his Old Trafford squad this summer according to the Daily Mirror.

Despite guiding his Man United side to a 20th domestic title Ferguson is apparently keen to bring in reinforcements and is looking to land a left-back, an additional striker and a long term replacement for Paul Scholes, who is set to announce his retirement from the game for a second time at the end of the current campaign.

Chief among his targets is apparently Everton full-back Leighton Baines, a player Ferguson wants to see act as a long term replacement for Patrice Evra. Man United will offer £15m for the England man and could well be confident of landing the former Wigan Athletic man, who knows that a high-profile move could further his ambition to displace Ashley Cole as Roy Hodgson’s first choice starter with the 2014 World Cup in Brazil on the horizon.

Wayne Rooney is being strongly linked with a Man United exit and with PSG said to be readying a £25m bid for the 27 year old there is apparently scope for a striker signing and this source believes Ferguson has earmarked a move for either Borussia Dortmund ace Robert Lewandowski or Atletico Madrid’s Radamel Falcao.

Both players have been in fine form for their respective clubs and a move for Polish international could be more likely given he has just over a year to run on his current contract and Falcao’s Vicente Calderon employers are looking for an astronomical fee for the Colombian goal machine.

Man United will see Wilfried Zaha move to the club this summer and will look to ship out Nani to make way for the Crystal Palace wide-man.

Veteran centre-back Rio Ferdinand will be handed a new one year deal whilst Ferguson looks to replace another long serving member of his squad, midfielder Paul Scholes.

Ferguson has monitored a number of potential replacements for the 38 year old including German international Marco Reus, PSV Eindhoven youngster Kevin Strootman and Celtic’s Victor Wanyama.

Outgoing Man United chief executive has spoken of his club’s desire to make use of the summer transfer window stating;

”I’m sure all the clubs who missed out this season will be doing business – as we will be – with a view to come back all guns blazing.”
