Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has finally spoken about new signing Danny Welbeck, but the news may not be what the fans want to hear as he claims that the striker would not have been bought had it not been transfer deadline day, the Metro reports.

Welbeck signed the Manchester united ace last monday, but because of the international break fans have yet to catch a glimpse of their new recruit at his new club.

Wenger has maintained silence over the matter during this time, though the Frenchman ended up creating more questions than answers after saying the deal only happened because he left London to travel to Rome, but refused to give more details.

“If I had not been away on deadline day, Welbeck would not have signed. That’s the truth,” said Wenger.

“The advantage of that day was I got up at 6am and was available the whole day.”

“I will tell you the story one day.”

Wenger then went on to reveal that he only wanted to sign the striker on loan instead of being forced to splash the cash on bringing him in permanently.

“With an option to buy yes. In the end, when it was a permanent transfer or loan with an option to buy, I was happy to buy permanently,” he said.

Asked to clarify if that meant he favoured a loan, Wenger added: “At start of day, he was only available on loan. At the end of the day, I agreed.”

Welbeck will likely feature against Manchester City this weekend to make his debut.
