Jose Mourinho has insisted that allowing Frank Lampard to leave was the best decision for Chelsea’s future despite the midfielder’s success at Manchester City.

Lampard left Stamford Bridge after 13 years with the west London side. He initially signed for new MLS outfit New York City FC on a two year deal before been sent on-loan to the American side’s sister club; Manchester City.

Chelsea cushioned the blow of losing their legendary, record goalscorer with the summer signings of Cesc Fabregas and striker Diego Costa; a move which Mourinho says was the right one for the development of the team.

“The nucleus of the team has to be developed,” said Mourinho. “A big player like Frank would stop the development of the other guys.

“When you want to look to the future and have people like Fàbregas, Matic and Jeremie Boga, who are the next ten years of the club, and the project is prepare for the next ten years not for the next year.

City have reaped the rewards since signing Lampard with four goals and one assist in his 11 Premier League matches, his first famously coming in City’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea.

“It’s his life, nothing to do with us,” said Mourinho reports The Times. “He left Chelsea as a free agent and chooses his life, we can’t complain about it. That’s football.

“We made the right decision. You can argue, ‘You have John Terry and Didier Drogba’, [but] Drogba is a striker that is coming to help and Terry is the best central defender in English football and it doesn’t matter how old he is.”
