The Chilean was fouled in the box by former Gunner Armand Traore, and promptly stepped up to take the penalty he had earned.

Santi Cazorla has been Arsenal’s designated spot-kick taker in the absence of captain Mikel Arteta, and the Spaniard has scored both the previous penalties he has taken for the North London club this season.

Sanchez demanded that he be allowed to go one-on-one against Rob Green from 12 yards, but saw his tame effort easily saved by the QPR shot-stopper.

The Arsenal boss claims it was not Sanchez’s decision to make however, and that Cazorla should have been the one to step up.

“I think Santi is a nice guy and let [Sanchez] take it. Honestly, he is not No 1 on the penalty list, that’s true,” Wenger said.

The former Barcelona star redeemed himself throughout the match, opening the scoring just before half time as well as providing a superb assist for Tomas Rosicky in the second period.

Arsenal’s game plan took a bit of a hit after Olivier Giroud was foolishly sent off, but the Gunners weathered a late storm to come out victorious.
