Özil suffered a knee ligament injury during the Gunners’ 2-0 defeat by Chelsea almost 12 weeks ago and hasn’t featured in the first XI since then at the beginning of October.

The weekend game against Hull City in the FA Cup comes too soon for the German playmaker, but he could make his eagerly anticipated comeback against Stoke City on January 11th.

Özil confirmed the news to German tabloid Bild saying: “I worked hard, with Klaus Eder in Donaustauf and with Arsenal, and I want to finally return to the field. Watching [Arsenal whilst being] injured has been very bitter for me. I really want to help my teams to catch up. Arsenal and the national team.”

Whilst Özil nears a first team return, his compatriot Lukas Podolski appears to be on the way out of the North London side with Arsene Wenger confirming an offer has been received from Inter Milan.

“The first proposal was farcical; after they came back a bit more serious,” said Arsene Wenger.

“We will see what happens. Inevitable? Not in the transfer market. It’s very difficult to say, but we’ll see.”
