Manchester United fans, it look as if one of your star players may be staying at Old Trafford for just a little bit longer.
It is being reported that Jose Mourinho’s side are willing to activate a contract extension clause in Spanish international Ander Herrera’s contract that would see him extend his time at the club by 12 months, should the player not renew his deal with the club before January.
This was reported by Manchester Evening News, who say that Red Devils boss Mourinho is unwilling to let United players run down their contracts should their deal include the option to extend their time at the club.
Since moving to United from Spanish side Athletic Bilbao in 2014, Herrera has enjoyed a successful time with the club so far.
As well as winning a Europa League, an FA Cup and a League cup, the midfielder has also managed to score 15 and assist 22 goals in 133 appearances for Mourinho’s side.
Since the arrival of teammate Paul Pogba, the Spanish international has seen his role in Mourinho’s side change a fair bit.
To accommodate Pogba’s attacking prowess, Herrera has often been given the task of playing the role of deep-lying playmaker, and is usually made to stay back whilst his teammates charge forward.
This can be seen in the amount of assists and goals the midfielder’s achieved in the past two seasons.
Herrera trebled the amount of goals he set up last season (6) compared to the season before (2). As well as this, he has also scored two less goals in the 2016/17 (1) season than he did in the 2015/16 season (3).

So far this campaign, Herrera is enduring a fairly dry spell on the goalscoring and playmaking front, as the former Bilbao ace is yet to register a goal or an assist for his side.
Should Herrera’s current form continue, it may not be worth United extending the player’s stay at Old Trafford.
