MOTD pundit explains why Arsenal fans should be frustrated after Tottenham win

Arsenal supporters will have been overjoyed to secure all three points against rivals Tottenham on Sunday, but Alan Shearer makes a great point.

Speaking on Match of the Day, the former striker gave his take on why Arsenal fans will be ‘frustrated’ with the win as it does raise a big question mark.

There’s no denying that the Gunners deserved their win and Arsene Wenger will be delighted with the manner in which they secured it. Having dominated the first half, they were able to stay compact and deny Tottenham a chance to get back into after the break, while also continuing to threaten themselves.

It comes just a fortnight after they were defeated by Manchester City, while their overall form hasn’t been good enough and that’s reflected in the fact that they sit in sixth place in the Premier League table, a point adrift of the top four and 12 points behind leaders City.

While the win over Tottenham will be remembered fondly for some time yet, Shearer was right to pick out the bigger point in the bigger picture for Arsenal.

“I criticised them for their lack of pressing at City but they were brilliant at it,” he said on MOTD, as reported by The Mirror. “They just got it perfect, they didn’t allow Spurs to play. It was a perfect performance.

“They were the much, much better team and that is why they are so frustrating as a team. They can perform like that and should do it more often.”

Consistency is ultimately the key word for Arsenal moving forward, as if they could get at teams like they did with Spurs on a regular basis and really put the pressure on them while going out to win games and showing their quality, they can beat any team on their day.

However, it’s about doing it week-in-and-week-out if they want to end their wait for a league title which goes back to 2004 now, although given City’s form so far this season, it could be beyond all the other teams for this year at least but that shouldn’t get away from Arsenal’s need to maintain that level every game.
