Manchester United identify alternative to Mauricio Pochettino in case Jose Mourinho leaves for PSG

Manchester United are reportedly looking at hiring Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone in case they lose Jose Mourinho in the summer, according to Don Balon.

Speculation has died down lately, but the Sun reported last month that Mourinho had held talks over taking the Paris Saint-Germain job.

PSG could do with a bigger name than Unai Emery at the helm at the Parc des Princes, with the Spanish tactician failing to live up to expectations in the job so far.

If Mourinho does leave, it seems Simeone may now have moved ahead of Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino in the running to take the Old Trafford hot seat.

The Daily Express previously claimed Pochettino looked a strong contender for United, though the Argentine tactician’s stock may have fallen a little in recent weeks after a down-turn in Spurs’ form.

Simeone arguably has more pedigree from his time with Atletico Madrid, whom he’s won La Liga with and reached two Champions League finals on a shoestring budget compared to many of their European rivals.

Don Balon now claim United are interested in Simeone, who seems a natural replacement for Mourinho given his demanding style and emphasis on a strong defence.
