Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho has voiced his displeasure with the fixture list and how he believes it benefits rivals Man City over the festive period.
It won’t help the Portuguese tactician’s mood given the fact that they sit 13 points adrift of Pep Guardiola’s men as their Premier League title hopes seem to have faded away this year.
City will surely still hit a poor run of form at some stage, especially given that they’re still involved in four different competitions, but that is a sizeable lead for United to wipe out.
Nevertheless, with four games in 10 days and just six rest days between December 23 and January 1, compared to seven rest days for City who didn’t have to train on Christmas Day as they don’t play on Boxing Day, it appears as though it’s not gone down well with Mourinho.
“I’m not just talking about the privileged runs with six days to recover and enjoy and to prepare but ones with a little bit more than us,” Mourinho told Sky Sports, as per ESPN FC.
“The extra day means a lot because it means they aren’t working [on Christmas Day], means they can be back to work [on Tuesday] and be ready for the next day. The problem I see here is the difference between some teams.”
It’s hard not to actually agree with Mourinho on this one, although he’ll naturally receive a backlash over his perceived moaning given his side aren’t leading the way.
Perhaps if that were the case then he wouldn’t say anything, but ultimately he’s made his feelings clear on the matter and he’ll just have to hope that City drop points regardless of the schedule.
The problem though seems to be United’s form at a crucial time of the campaign, as they were dumped out of the League Cup last week and followed that up with a draw at Leicester City.
If they have ambitions of not ending the season empty-handed, they’ll have to get back to top form sooner rather than later.
