Man Utd to splash out staggering €60m as Mourinho eyes key solution to problem area

The left-back position remains an issue for Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho, and he’s been tipped to spend big to address it in the near future.

Although Luke Shaw seems to have turned a corner and has earned the trust of his manager having started the last three Premier League games, it hasn’t always been so straight-forward for him.

Coupled with the fact that the likes of Ashley Young and Matteo Darmian have been top of the pecking order at various times, Mourinho has had to try different options without being able to settle on a long-term solution.

Shaw will hope that he is now finally solidifying his place at Old Trafford and will cement his spot in the line-up as a regular starter, but he must stay fit and play at a high level to ensure that happens.

According to Record, he’ll be facing severe competition from the summer onwards, as they claim that Man Utd are set to make a €60m bid for Napoli left-back Faouzi Ghoulam.

That in turn will see the Serie A leaders spend €30m on signing Benfica star Alejandro Grimaldo, with Record going into real detail about contract terms to suggest that there could be a genuine possibility of the agreement leading to a transfer.

Ghoulam has been an important figure in Maurizio Sarri’s side, establishing himself as one of the top left-backs in Italy with his consistency and reliability in offering defensive solidity and an attacking threat down the left flank as the Partenopei go for the title this season.

In turn, he would be a top signing for the Red Devils, albeit an expensive one at €60m, but time will tell if Shaw can prove to Mourinho that he doesn’t need to sign another left-back and can therefore spend that money more wisely elsewhere to bolster his squad.
