Jose Mourinho rages at ref as Chelsea crash to Aston Villa defeat

JOSE MOURINHO questions whether Chris Foy should ever referee Chelsea again after a game that turned into chaos at Villa Park.

Chelsea finished with two men sent off, plus Mourinho, and their Premier League title hopes damaged.

Mourinho is likely to be fined or banned for stepping on to the pitch in an attempt to talk to Foy.

Willian was red carded for two bookable offences and Ramires for a terrible stamp on Karim El Ahmadi that Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert described as "a leg breaker." Foy also sent off two Chelsea players against QPR nearly two and a half years ago.

"I remember something similar, it was in a match with QPR, at their stadium," said Mourinho.

With the same referee? "I didn't know."

There were two players sent off as well? "I didn't know. It's a coincidence." Mourinho said everything without saying anything, refusing an outright attack on Foy and being fined.

He said: "I don't want to say one single word. If I say the first word I will say 10, 100, 1,000, and be accused of bringing the game into disrepute.

"Donations I prefer to do anonymously and to people who really need the money.

"I was angry but calm."

Mourinho should have hugely condemned Ramires - even though El Ahamadi used up all his luck to escape with a sore leg - and it is to his detriment he did not.

Instead Mourinho said, weakly, that he did not see the challenge and instead committed himself to not directly criticising Foy.

Foy has sent off six Chelsea players, plus Mourinho, in the last eight times he has refereed them, so no further red rag was needed.

Asked if he realised Foy had shown a lot of red cards to Chelsea players, Mourinho said: "During the week the players were speaking about the situation and I think from now on, the next time we have Mr Foy, I have to work my people in a different way .

"But do they have a reason? Maybe it is helpful that the committee doesn't send him to our matches.

"I don't have the right to request that.

"They have to analyse the situation and to see if in the many times he has Chelsea the problems are there. I think maybe it will be a good decision."

A spokesman for the Professional Game Match Officals, who provide referees for Premier League games, confirms clubs cannot request who does and does not referee games.

Given that officials are given at least six weeks before refereeing teams again, it is unlikely Foy will be in charge of a Chelsea once more this season. And Mourinho will not be able to use him to deflect away the inquest over a defeat.

Aston Villa deservedly beat Chelsea, with an excellent winning goal from Fabian Delph, a reverse flicked shot from distance that Lambert described as ( Johan) 'Cruffyed'.

If Mourinho misses out on the title, it will be games against Midlands club - not referees - that will have caused it.

Chelsea were given a referee's help , Lambert will say, in beating Villa 2-1 at Stamford Bridge, they got a penalty that wasn't in a 2-2 draw with West Brom, lost at Stoke, took only a point in the return at The Hawthorns and now this.

"We all know what Jose's doing," said Lambert. "He's deflecting away from the result.

"I'm proud of the players. It's a mammoth effort to go and beat Chelsea."

Villa, for the first time in the 18 month rebuild under Lambert, looked mature, without the lapses that leave them vulnerable. Maybe a young team grew up.

Villa's task is to do it again against the less glamorous neighbours from Stoke on Sunday while Mourinho has a Champions League game, and no excuses, tomorrow.

Delph, fouled by Willian for his second booking, probably summed it up best. Asked about the sendings off, he said: "If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck it usually is. Let's just leave it at that."
