Chambers is on the verge of completing his move to the Emirates after agreeing personal terms and completing a medical.

The 19-year-old right-back is thought to be costing Arsenal £12m up front which could rise to £16m with add-ons.

But with Chambers having made just 18 Premier League starts in his career, Wenger admits the move is something of a gamble.

"He can play at centre-back, right-back and central midfield," Wenger said.

"I hope he will give us competition for the players in these three positions.

"He hasn't played many games, no, but the English players on the market in England are very expensive and at the end of the day I was ready to take a gamble because he is a player for the future."

Chambers is set to act as a deputy to France international Mathieu Debuchy, signed for £12m from Newcastle this summer.

Carl Jenkinson's future is under threat from the pair, although he may be kept on as a squad player.
