FORMER England boss Steve McClaren is demanding the FA crack down on diving cheats as his Derby team take on Chelsea in the Capital One Cup.

Steve McClaren says diving is a game changer and can cost you the match

McClaren wants the FA to toughen up and take retrospective action on players who con referees by diving.

Hull manager Steve Bruce was furious after two Chelsea players, Willian and Diego Costa, were booked for diving and a third, Gary Cahill, seemed to get away with it in a 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Cahill has been taken out of the firing line at the iPro Stadium tonight with manager Jose Mourinho resting him for Kurt Zouma.

When Chelsea won at Derby a year ago in the FA Cup, Ramires was booked by referee Andre Mariner for diving but Mourinho, as he did on Saturday, defiantly said that none of his players were divers.

Bruce said Chelsea were like "Swan Lake" on Saturday and they will be under scrutiny again at Derby in the quarter-final of the League Cup.

It needs to be stamped out

Steve McClaren

McClaren makes it clear that he believes there is no place for cheats and it is up to the FA to purge football of the divers in this country.

"Should there be retrospective action? Absolutely," said McClaren. "If people cheat and do wrong then they have to suffer the consequences. It should happen. They do it in other things so why not for diving or simulation?

"It is a similar crime to red cards or dangerous tackles, it can cost you a game. All we can do is beat the drum.

"It is obviously a problem and the authorities must see that because it keeps getting mentioned and it has for years and still nothing's done.

"It's part of the game that unfortunately is there. Managers and coaches address it but we can't control it. That's up to the authorities. They have to deal with that.

"It needs to be stamped out.

Steve Bruce was furious with Chelsea's diving calling it like 'Swan Lake'

"We try to do it as managers and coaches. But it's up to referees and the authorities to take the action we can't take.

"We don't like it in our players. We referee all the time in games and if anyone goes over we don't give anything all. You have to teach players and guide them playing the right way."

The spotlight would have been on Cahill and leaving him out is good timing by Mourinho.

"We have no reason to rest people. The only not going to Derby, because I haven't given him a break, is Cahill," said Mourinho. "Cahill doesn't play, I play Zouma.

"We're going to be against a top team in the Championship. The difference between a top team in the Championship and the teams of the Premier League are very, very small. We played there last year and it was not an easy game."

McClaren calls the penalty area the red zone and will warn his defenders to be careful.

"We have to coach our defenders better, tell them stay on their feet and don't dive in," he said. "Once a player's in that penalty area, it's what we call the red zone. It's danger. Don't give the opponent the opportunity to fall over or catch your foot, to put yourself into that situation where it's a desperate challenge.

"We just say to players they have to be smart."

Premier League Team of the Week - Gameweek 16

Chelsea won 2-0 at Derby in the FA Cup with goals from John Obi-Mikel and Oscar but their home record is good with only one defeat in 24 games in all competitions since that day.

Successive away defeats, at Leeds and Middlesbrough, have knocked Derby out of the Championship's top two but captain Richard Keogh said: "What better way to bounce back from the Middlesbrough defeat than to play against a world-class team and world-class players.

"We are ready and excited. It is going to be a good benchmark to see how far we have come since we last played Chelsea in January.

"I missed that game with a knee injury but I thought the lads acquitted themselves well. Chelsea's quality shone through in the end, but overall it was a good performance.

"I think as a squad we have matured since then. We are striving to play against this calibre of team and player every week."

Keogh, a central defender, will have Jake Buxton alongside him because of Ryan Shotton's suspension and Costa, Didier Drogba or Loic Remy to tame.

"Whoever plays, I will be looking forward to the challenge, relishing it," he said. "I've had a taste of it at international level with the Republic of Ireland, players like Ronaldo, it is something I enjoy and I think it brings out the best in me."
