Arsene Wenger was surprised some Arsenal fans stayed away from the Emirates

The Emirates had large swathes of the stadium unfilled, as the supporters took it upon themselves to express their disgust at the current regime.

59,568 was the official attendance of tonight's game, although there appeared to be a lot less as many seats were bought but were otherwise unoccupied.

Despite some fans boycotting the Premier League match, the Gunners enjoyed a comfortable 2-0 victory over West Brom.

Wenger has come under intense scrutiny this term, especially with his side's title challenge fading after the turn of the year.

Although the Frenchman, who has been in charge of the club for 20 years, accepts the match took place on a Thursday, he was at a loss to explain why some fans refused to attend.

"I don’t know why the fans stayed away," Wenger said.

"It’s Thursday night, it’s not easy and I do not want to comment on that.

"I’m commenting on football."

Alexis Sanchez's double proved the difference as the Gunners leapfrogged Manchester City into third spot.

Wenger's men will look to tighten their grip on third when they face strugglers Sunderland on Sunday (2:05pm).
