However, the Manchester Evening News claim United are keen to sign the 29-year-old as Jose Mourinho wants some experience at the heart of his defence.

The Portuguese signed 22-year-old centre-back  last month from Villarreal and he got his first run-out in a United shirt during the 4-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

But despite playing the full 90 minutes, Mourinho has hinted Bailly will not be first-choice once the season gets underway and raised questions over his ability to communicate in English.

“He is a very young boy coming from a completely different environment, but you could see what he is at this moment,” Mourinho said.

“For Eric this was the first time he has worn a shirt like the Manchester United shirt.

“He can't speak English and can only communicate with the players who are French speakers or Spanish so for him it'll be step by step and that's why I gave him more than 45 minutes.”

Bonucci, by comparison, has a wealth of experience and made 49 appearances in all competitions for Juve last term, winning the domestic treble in Italy.
