Arsene Wenger is in the market for a new defender following Per Mertesacker's recent injury set-back.
Arsenal manager Wenger confirmed Mertesacker will be out for "months" after undergoing knee surgery in Germany.
And the Frenchman revealed he will look to sign cover for the centre-back.
"We have bad news on Per Mertesacker," Wenger said.
Icardi deal off
Inter Milan president Erick Thohir insists Arsenal target Mauro Icardi is not for sale.
Gunners officials supposedly had talks with Icardi's wife and agent Wanda Nara last week.
The 23-year-old striker was named club captain under manager Roberto Mancini at the start of last season.
And Thohir is confident Inter can keep the Argentina international despite interest from Arsenal and Napoli.
"We're not going to sell Icardi. We've received offers - from Napoli too - but we're not going to sell him," he said.
"We extended his contract a year ago. We're like a family and we can always talk if there are problems or discuss what we'd like to achieve together in future.
"He's our captain and an important player for us. We're very happy with him."
