Man United’s new midfield: This is Jose Mourinho’s dream partnership for new season

JOSE MOURINHO is reportedly set to pair up Paul Pogba and Michael Carrick in his Manchester United midfield.

Paul Pogba says he’s delighted to be ‘back home’ at Man United

The new Red Devils boss has variety of combinations to choose from going forward.

United are expected to deploy a 4-2-3-1 formation, having opted for that in the 2-1 Community Shield win over Leicester.

And world-record signing Pogba will form one of the two in Mourinho’s centre-midfield, according to the Mirror.

Morgan Schneiderlin and Ander Herrera are fighting for their place, but 35-year-old Carrick is on course to partner Pogba due to his experience.

Jose Mourinho finally landed Paul Pogba at Manchester United on Monday night

"We have Michael Carrick, a 34 or 35-year-old-man,” Mourinho told BT Sport

“[He is] Stable, intelligent, to play as one man in front of the defenders, give us all the stability, he knows everything. Tactically, very intelligent.

"We have people like Schneiderlin, Herrera, also play as that, they have experience of the Premier League but after that we have No.10s. (Juan) Mata we have, we have possibly (Wayne) Rooney, we have (Henrikh) Mkhitaryan, we have No.10s.”

Carrick was handed a one-year contract extension in June following his 10 years of service at Old Trafford.

The England international has been an integral part of United’s side since Sir Alex Ferguson’s days in charge.

And with Pogba adding skill, power and attacking threat to Mourinho’s midfield, Carrick can balance out the France star with his passing and defensive qualities.

United’s new signing from Juventus could be in the squad for the first time since rejoining when they take on Bournemouth at Dean Court on Sunday (1.30pm).
