Are you talking about Man Utd, Arsene? Wenger says clubs paying 10 times too much for aces

ARSENE WENGER claims English clubs are paying up to 10 times over the odds for players as he defended his own reluctance to get involved in the transfer market.

Arsene Wenger initially described Manchester United's move for Paul Pogba as "crazy"

The Arsenal boss believes that with the new Premier League TV rights deal, English clubs are quoted a premium when it comes to signing the continent’s top talent.

Manchester United broke the world transfer record this summer after paying at least £89million to sign Paul Pogba from Juventus.

Wenger backtracked on his initial claim that United’s move for Pogba was “crazy” but could his latest comments on transfers be referring to the world's most expensive player...

“There are many criteria for the price of a player but you could add one more: the identity of the buyer,” Wenger said.

“When the buyer is English, it is true that it multiplies the transfer by two or three or sometimes by 10.

“Because if for the same player an English club does not come in, he is worth five million. But if an English club comes he is worth 35 or 40 or 50.

“Before you pay over the odds you have to be convinced that the player is good enough to strengthen your squad and you then have to make the decision as to how much you pay over the odds.

“That is not a problem but you must then have the money available to pay because we’ve already invested, people forget that, at a very high price and we will do it again.”
