The 28-year-old shot-stopper was said to have undergone a medical ahead of a potential Vicarage Road switch on transfer deadline day.

But Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf claims Krul was left incensed by Watford's lengthy procedure and allegedly complained: “Every bone and every muscle looked at.”

Krul returned to his native Holland later that day to enter talks with Eredivisie club AZ Alkmaar, where he eventually joined until the end of the season.

And the experienced keeper is now looking forward to regular game time, having been limited to just nine appearances last season through injury.

The Dutch international tweeted: "I'm grateful to @AZAlkmaar for giving me the opportunity! Can't wait to be on the pitch!"
