Man Utd transfer news: Ivan Perisic is wanted by Jose Mourinho

United have coveted Bale since 2013 and failed with a bid of £100million when he decided to join Real from Tottenham instead.

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has remained a long-time admirer of the Welshman - and United could now make a new move to lure him to Old Trafford after Real boss Zinedine Zidane admitted he could not guarantee Bale will stay at the Bernabeu this summer.

But if that fails, and Bale agrees to stay, it will force United to go back in for the Croat.

The Independent report Bale staying is remain at Real and claim that could see United will return to the man they’d downgraded as their secondary option.

That broke down after United became frustrated with the progress of the move.

It’s claimed they had come within a few million of the £48m asking price but then moved on to Bale once Inter refused to budge.

Perisic is now on Inter’s pre-season tour and there has been renewed contact between the clubs.

United, however, are maintaining their stance that they don’t want to get locked in a transfer war where they are milked for every penny.

Boss Jose Mourinho admitted this week he wants to sign a sideman.

He said: "I would like one player [to be] a midfield player, [that] would give me more options to the balance and the team.

"Another one an attacking player, especially that can play through the wings to give me more attacking options but I never speak about players that belong to other teams.

"I don't like if any manager comes and would say he would like one of my players, that's not correct. I would like two more players but probably I only get one."
