Bale’s long term future with the Champions League winners is in doubt but he could still make the switch to Old Trafford during this transfer window.

The Welsh superstar is known to be unhappy at dropping down the pecking order at the La Liga champions and could dip further if Real sign Monaco sensation Kylian Mbappe.

Zinedne Zidane is willing to sacrifice the 28 year-old who was hit by a series of injuries last season once Mbappe arrives in the Spanish capital.

United have backed Mourinho with over £100 million spent this summer Romelu Lukaku costing £75 million and Victor Lindelof £31 million.

He has been told that more money is available but they have refused to meet Inter Milan’s £48 million asking price for Ivan Perisic.

Premier League clubs now often think 12 months ahead in terms of their recruitment with a bid to bring Bale back to the Premier League earmarked for the summer of 2018.

But despite it likely to blow a massive hole in their budget Mourinho would move for Bale if he does come onto the market this summer.
