What did Phil Jones say to drugs official? Man Utd star handed two game-ban after bust-up

PHIL JONES will be banned from Manchester United’s UEFA Super Cup clash with Real Madrid next week after a bust-up with a doping control officer at the Europa League final in May.

It means Jose Mourinho will be without two central defenders for the game in Skopje because Eric Bailly is already ruled out after UEFA extended his ban for a red card in the Europa League semi-final second leg against Villarreal.

Jones has been found guilty of being verbally abusive towards a doping official after he was requested to attend random drug-testing following the win over Ajax in Stockholm’s Friends Arena where he was an unused substitute.

Jones, who will also be banned from United’s first Champions League group game in September, has been fined £4,500 while team-mate Daley Blind has been fined a similar amount – although not suspended – for a similar offence.

It is understood Blind, who played the full 90 minutes, was reluctant to take the test because he wanted to celebrate with his team-mates after a victory that ensured United’s return to the Champions League.

United have been fined £8,950 for the regulation breaches although there is no suggestion either player was guilty of doping. The club have three days to launch an appeal to UEFA.

Meanwhile the FA are to dramatically step up their drug testing of players this season, with more than 5,000 tests planned from this weekend to the end of the campaign.

Some 3,000 tests were conducted last season but the number will now be double the amount undertaken in 2015-16.

The Football League, meanwhile, is introducing the new ABBA format for penalty shoot-outs in its competitions during the 2017/18 season.

The system is based on the format used in tennis tie-breaks, with the team taking the first kick in each pair of kicks alternating, so AB BA AB and so on instead of AB AB etc. The EFL’s trial of the format will apply to this season’s Carabao Cup, Checkatrade Trophy and the play-offs.
