Michael Owen thinks Arsenal's fans should get behind Arsene Wenger

Arsene Wenger came under fire from supporters for much of last season as uncertainty surrounded the Frenchman's future.

The 67-year-old eventually penned a new two-year deal but the Gunners missed out on a Champions League place for the first time in 19 years, finishing fifth in the league.

And Michael Owen thinks the north London club's struggles are in part due to the negative attitude of their fans, who he thinks are in stark contrast to Liverpool's.

"Since [Philippe] Coutinho signed the new contract Liverpool have qualified for the Champions League, bought more quality players and are in a better place than they've been for a long time," Owen said.

"With Arsenal I'm just not sure about the overall feeling within the club.

"My gut feeling is they could win five straight games, but if they lose the sixth the Wenger out brigade will come out.

"This creates a negative atmosphere and that's probably the main thing going against Arsenal."

Owen thinks Arsenal fans should instead be more optimistic for the season ahead and admitted he has been impressed by the Gunners' summer dealings so far.

"I like Lacazette, he's a predator who knows where the ball is going to drop in the box," the former England striker added.

"I think Olivier Giroud gets some harsh criticism but they needed another top class striker and Lacazette is a very good buy."

The France international joined the Gunners for a club record £52million from Lyon - surpassing the previous record set by Mesut Ozil in 2013.
