RAFA BENITEZ is on course for a car crash at Newcastle over their lack of spending.

That's according to Dean Saunders, who feels the boss is on a collision course over the club's transfer business.

Benitez guided Newcastle back to the Premier League for this season but his signings since have been relatively low key.

Jacob Murphy has made a £12million move from Norwich while Christian Atsu has joined permanently from Chelsea.

Florian Lejeune, Stefan O'Connor, Josef Yarney, Mikel Merino and Javier Manquillo have also signed but it's hardly the summer turnaround of quality the Toon fans will have wanted.

And Saunders told talkSPORT: "The conversation when they appointed him would have been 'come and get us back up, we'll give you a good contract. When you do get us back up we'll let you spend this amount of money.'

"The problem is, that spending isn't happening at the moment.

"Benitez, the way he is, doesn’t mess around. There's a car crash coming at Newcastle."

The Magpies have just one pre-season game left and Benitez this week admitted he has no idea of his strongest side.

The Spaniard said: “We are getting closer. I would not be worried about who will start, because everybody will have a chance.

“What we want is a group of players that have to compete for their position and everybody has to feel that they can play and do well. That is the key.

“If they compete, we will be stronger. If they think ‘there’s 11 starters and that’s it’, then it will be worse for us. We need players now with the idea that they can play.”
