Romelu Lukaku made 'big mistake' v Real Madrid: Man Utd star's brain 'wasn't switched on'

MANCHESTER UNITED striker Romelu Lukaku made a "big mistake" in the first half of the European Super Cup defeat against Real Madrid tonight.

That is according to pundit and former Liverpool and Real Madrid star Steve McManaman.

Lukaku scored on his full competitive debut for Manchester United after joining from Everton for around £75million last month.

However, it was a moment in the first 45 minutes which frustrated McManaman.

United midfielder Ander Herrera seemingly played himself through on goal but Lukaku, in an offside position, came across and took the ball, with the assistant referee swiftly raising his flag.

I know we can sort of brush over it but Romelu Lukaku must know he's offside surely

McManaman says Lukaku should have known he was in an illegal position and should have left the ball to his Manchester United team-mate.

"This was a really big mistake I thought," he said on BT Sport.

"I know we can sort of brush over it but Lukaku must know he's offside surely.

"And then if he just runs into the centre area he is getting a tap in off Herrera.

Romelu Lukaku's brain was not switched on, according to Steve McManaman

"I thought that was a massive mistake. When goalkeepers make mistakes and centre halves they invariably lead to chances.

"That should have been a really good opportunity on goal.

"Maybe with the heat his brain is not switched on a little bit."

Real won the game 2-1, with Casemiro and Isco's efforts enough despite Lukaku's goal.
