United were beaten by the European champions in Macedonia after goals from Casemiro and Isco.

Romelu Lukaku hit back but was unable to fire his team back to level terms.

He missed a sitter and Marcus Rashford missed a good chance before David De Gea was forced into a point blank save.

But in the end United were beaten and Jose Mourinho forced to take another look at his side.

And the BBC claimed United fans were seen in tears following the full time whistle.

United won three trophies last season and secured a return to the Champions League by winning the Europa League.

But they’ve still got a way to go to reach the heights of their rivals on this showing despite spending £150m on new players in the summer.

New boys Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof were all on display and gave mixed showings.

Matic impressed in midfield alongside Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba.

But Lindelof looked off the pace and was at fault for the opener.

Lukaku had a mixed game missing a good chance seven yards out when he blasted over after Pogba’s header was saved before scoring United’s only goal.
