Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial shock: Steven Gerrard questions future of Man Utd duo

STEVEN GERRARD believes Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial could leave Manchester United if they don’t improve this season.

Anthony Martial destroys Real Madrid defence with superb run

Martial has been linked with a move to Inter Milan this summer after struggling last season under Jose Mourinho.

The 21-year-old scored just seven goals in 42 appearances in all competitions last season and made just 18 starts in the Premier League.

Lingard featured more prominently last term but now appears to be behind Marcus Rashford and Henrikh Mkhitaryan as Mourinho’s first-choice options in the wide areas.

And in last night’s 2-1 UEFA Super Cup defeat to Real Madrid, Lingard struggled in an unfamiliar left wing-back position.

I think if those individuals don’t find consistency over the next 12 months, I don’t think they’ll be at Manchester United very long

Speaking after the match, Gerrard doubted whether Lingard and Martial had done enough to be considered United players and claimed they could be sold if they have a poor season.

He said on BT Sport: “I think Jose’s found his spine now with the signings he’s made.

“Manchester United to me look very strong as team down the middle.

Steven Gerrard is unsure about Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial

“I’m not sure these players we’re talking about in the wide areas, the likes of Lingard and Martial.

“I’m not sure they’ve hit those heights yet to be really described as a Man Utd player.

“I think it’s big season for them. I think if those individuals don’t find consistency over the next 12 months, I don’t think they’ll be at Manchester United very long.”
