Nemanja Matic to Man Utd: Chelsea boss Antonio Conte opens up about ‘great loss’

CHELSEA boss Antonio Conte has described losing Nemanja Matic to Manchester United as a “great loss”.

Matic: I can't wait to start training with Manchester United

The Premier League champions surprisingly sold Matic to rivals Manchester United last month for £40million.

Matic played an integral role in Chelsea winning the league title twice in three years but the Serbian made way for the arrival of Tiemoue Bakayoko, who joined from Monaco for £40m.

Conte has previously hinted Chelsea went against his wishes by selling Matic, especially to a direct rival.

And speaking at the Premier League Launch in London today, the Italian coach said he had to accept the departure of the 29-year-old.

Sometimes you must accept different decisions. But he is a great loss for us

"Matic knows very well what I think about him," Conte said Sky Sports.

“The importance for me about this player, who is a really good player, a top player, very important for our team, but sometimes you must accept this crazy transfer market.

"And sometimes you must accept different decisions. But he is a great loss for us."

Chelsea have made four major signings in the window so far and Conte feels his side will struggle to retain their title without more players.

Conte added: “Yes, for sure. This league is not easy.

“Six teams are very strong and you must be prepared. I hope to be able to improve our squad.

“The transfer market is not finished. We want to be competitive and we want to fight for the title again. The club knows my priorities.

“It won't be easy. It's a great challenge for us to try and retain the title but we are working hard.”
