The Portuguese boss is desperate to land another wide player before the transfer window shuts at the end of the month.

Speculation has been rife over United's interest in Bale with Mourinho addressing the rumours in public.

Bale started in Madrid's 2-1 Uefa Super Cup win over United last night and after the match Mourinho took that as Zinedine Zidane sending out a message the Welshman would not be sold.

Jose Mourinho remains keen on signing Gareth Bale

"Clearly the club want him, the manager wants him and he wants the club.

"So for me, game over, even before it started."

But Spanish publication Diario Gol claim behind closed doors Mourinho is still hopeful of signing the former Tottenham star.

However, the report states Mourinho does not believe he is worth the €100million (£90.4m) Madrid value him at.

And Mourinho has made it clear he will not pay more than €80m (£72m) for his services.

Gareth Bale is under contract with Real Madrid until 2022

Bale remains on Mourinho's wishlist because the Portuguese boss believes he is one of the top 10 players in the world they have a realistic chance in signing this summer.

Bale is under contract with Los Blancos until 2022 and insists he is focused on preparing for the upcoming campaign with Madrid.

"I'm just concentrating on my football and I'm not listening to anything. I'm not reading anything, although people tell me bits and bobs," he said after Madrid's win over United.

"I'm enjoying my football and playing as much as I can and winning trophies."
