Pochettino has been warned by former Spurs boss Tim Sherwood about letting the defender go.

Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast on talkSPORT, the former Tottenham boss said: “They have to be very careful.

”As a manager, if you start going very hard into a player he will just say 'well, I want to leave' and someone will pay that magic figure for Danny Rose.

Danny Rose has been linked with Manchester United after comments over Tottenham's transfer activity

“He is one of best left-backs - if not the best - in the country and I can see Man City and Man United and all these guys putting their hand up to sign Danny Rose.

“As a manager, you don't want to burn any bridges with the players. I know Danny, his personality, what he can be like. Sometimes you can't always give it to them that straight because you need them players - and Tottenham certainly needs him.

“They have lost their first choice right-back in Kyle Walker. They cannot lose Danny Rose.

“So it is a very delicate situation that the manager has to deal with there.”

Tottenham Hotspur are yet to make a signing in this transfer window.

Speaking to the Sun, Rose said: “I will say this too — I will play up north.

“I don’t know exactly when, but I will get back up north and play some football somewhere. I moved away from home (from Leeds to Spurs) at 16.

Tim Sherwood warned Mauricio Pochettino to keep hold of Danny Rose

“Yes I’ve got teammates who have moved away from families in South Korea and Argentina, but I have been away for over ten years now and I don’t get to see my mum that often.

“I am going to make it my priority before I retire to play football up there.

“My short-term focus is to get back to playing like last year and if I do that the long-term will take care of itself.”

The 27-year-old reportedly earns £65,000-a-week at Spurs but could double or triple that with a big move away.

The comments from Rose stunned Manchester United legend, Gary Neville. He tweeted: “WTF is Danny Rose thinking!!

“Imagine walking into the training ground having not been fit for months and months. Morning lads!!”
