Exclusive: Spurs can't mirror Arsenal model and lose stars… but they have youth - Jenas

JERMAINE JENAS has warned old club Tottenham they cannot replicate Arsenal's ability to sell star players but still compete at the top.

Spurs could be facing a potential exodus due to unrest over salaries and a lack of trophies.

Manchester United and Chelsea target Danny Rose's explosive interview this week highlighted the strain in Mauricio Pochettino's team.

Tottenham have grown in recent years, especially under the Argentine manager, but still have no silverware to show for their efforts.

Spurs did finally finish above north London rivals Arsenal last term, however, Champions League qualification may not be enough to keep their best players.

Following Arsenal's move to the Emirates, Arsene Wenger had to limit his budget and saw top-class signings become a rarity each summer.

Tottenham face a similar problem now ahead of their debut season at Wembley and move into their new ground in 2018.

But should Tottenham copy Arsenal's model from the past 10 years?

BT Sport pundit Jermaine Jenas told Express Sport: "Where Arsenal have been very good and very strong is they've had the ability to sell their stars and still move in that direction.

"I'm not sure Spurs are there yet. I don't think they can afford to lose a Dele Alli right now or even a [Christian] Eriksen unless they really go out there and replace them with someone solid.

"Arsene Wenger really went through a stage, even when he was getting rid of people like [Patrick] Vieira, who was one of those big, big ones, and the rest kind of followed - [Cesc] Fabregas, [Robin] van Persie - world stars we're talking about and he still managed to compete and maintain that level.

"That's what I would have said was Arsenal's model."

While Tottenham have plenty of talented players, their youngster are also making waves in the first team under Pochettino.

Jenas added: "Spurs' model - they are looking to youth, and I think it's a very good way to go.

"Obviously it puts a lot of pressure on the youngsters to perform, but I do think he's got a group of players around them that can protect them.

Jermaine Jenas believes former side Tottenham cannot afford to sell key stars like Arsenal did

"He's not going to play Harry Winks with Josh Onomah, I know he's just gone to Aston Villa, but obviously when Josh played in midfield at the [Under-20] World cup he showed ability, but [Pochettino] was never going to go and do that.

"He would always have someone experienced next to Harry, kind of guiding him through.

"The fact that he has gone to the youth is something a lot of clubs should look at and respect.

"Whether it works or not we will see. It's a brave move from the club and Mauricio, but he knows his players better than anyone."
