“We are in a society now to throw away the old and bring in the new,” Gazidis said on Sky Sports.

“We thought about the issue about who we wanted to take us forward.

“When we thought about the qualities it was someone who could represent our values.

“Somebody who would play attractive football and we are well known for that.

“Someone who would give young players a chance and we are conscious of that.

“You look across the world - there are no better contenders than Arsene Wenger.

“This wasn’t a decision made out of loyalty - it was made on us getting success.

“We want to do well in the Premier League - we have not been close enough in recent years.

“We recognised there was a gap and have done a lot of work behind the scenes.”
