Gylfi Sigurdsson: Everton did not need to sign midfielder - Brian McBride

GYLFI SIGURDSSON completed his club-record move to Everton from Swansea this evening, but former Toffee Brian McBride has questioned the move.

Gylfi Sigurdsson scores stunning free kick for Iceland

Sigurdsson cost Everton around £45million and has signed a five-year deal with the Merseyside club.

The Iceland international is the eighth signing by manager Ronald Koeman this summer and the third attacking midfielder.

Wayne Rooney and Davy Klaassen have also joined the Koeman revolution at Goodison Park.

Everton have seen their record Premier League goalscorer Romelu Lukaku leave the club for Manchester United for £75million and McBride says they should have looked to replace him rather than sign Sigurdsson.

Now you’ve got Gylfi Sigurdsson, I just think they’ve got an abundance of midfielders and not that replacement for Lukaku

“Sigurdsson is going to help at any team, he’s a very good player,” McBride told ESPN FC.

“But I look at this and when you sell Romelu Lukaku, and you bring in Sandro (Ramirez) who didn’t look like he was really capable of breaking down a team either individually or getting free in the box, I would think they would be looking at another forward to be honest.

“The midfield is pretty stacked. Wayne Rooney can play underneath, but where he played at the weekend was perfect.

“He has the capability to make the game but he also still has the capability to score goals.

Gylfi Sigurdsson: Everton needed a replacement for Romelu Lukaku instead, says Brian McBride

“I just think their midfield is packed, it’s loaded. The fact that (Tom) Davies didn’t even start at the weekend, who I think is an exceptional young player and a talent midfielder, who, unlike many midfielders in any league, he actually has the capability to break down lines himself.

“I’d like to see him play more, but now you’ve got Sigurdsson, you’ve also bought Klaassen, I just think they’ve got an abundance of midfielders and not that replacement for Lukaku.”

Everton is Sigurdsson's third club in England, after two spells at Swansea were sandwiched by two seasons at Tottenham.

Sigurdsson scored 34 goals in 124 Premier League games for the Swans.
