MANCHESTER UNITED boss Jose Mourinho tried to sign Neymar, Gareth Bale AND Antoine Griezmann this summer, according to journalist Duncan Castles.

Manchester United have so far wrapped up deals for Victor Lindelof, Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic.

But it appears their summer business could have been even better had they landed a marquee name.

Castles claims the Red Devils were initially in the market for Greizmann, Gareth Bale and Neymar but Mourinho failed to land either of the three.

“Antoine Griezmann he tried to get, Neymar he was involved in trying to persuade to come to Manchester United, he's tried to get Gareth Bale,” he told the The Transfer Window podcast.

“He obviously sees that Man Utd need more of that if he's to make them what he's expected to - contenders for the Champions League.”

It is no secret that Griezmann was initially earmarked as the Red Devils’ priority signing.

However, Atletico Madrid’s transfer ban ultimately scuppered their chances of landing the France international.

Mourinho was also keen to sign Bale from Real Madrid but, publicly at least, conceded defeat after their 2-1 European Super Cup defeat to Los Blancos last week.

Manchester United also wanted to snap up Gareth Bale and Neymar

"The club wants him, the manager wants him, and, more importantly, he wants the club,” he told BT Sport.

"For me, it is game over. I think now everybody knows he is going to stay."

Neymar was another name linked with a move to Old Trafford as his days at Barcelona winded down.

However, the Brazil international instead joined Paris Saint-Germain for a world-record £198million.
