Barcelona transfer news: Sergi Roberto insists he wants to stay at the Nou Camp

SERGI ROBERTO has closed the door on a possible move away from the Nou Camp by stating he is happy with his role at Barcelona.

The midfielder was speaking after Barcelona kicked off their La Liga campaign with a 2-0 win over Real Betis, in which he scored the second goal.

It was suggested earlier this summer that Roberto had grown increasingly concerned about his opportunities in the starting line-up this season.

Barcelona have been continually linked with a move for Philippe Coutinho as a marquee signing to bolster their midfield options.

And rumours of Roberto's unrest led to interest from both Manchester United and Chelsea.

But the 25-year-old insists he is happy with his current squad role under Ernesto Valverde.

"I'm happy," Roberto said. "[Against Real Madrid in the Super Cup] I was happy on a personal level and I felt comfortable today, too. I played in my favoured midfield position.

"I started at the Bernabeu and the coach has given me confidence. I've scored today and I want to be important.

"In preseason I wasn't starting, but now in the official matches I am playing more. I want to continue here and continue like this."

Roberto was mainly deployed at right-back last season but has proven a versatile player for Barcelona over the years.

His versatility across the back line and in a midfield role brought him to the attention of both Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte who are keen to add more players to their squad before the transfer window closes.
