Arsenal Transfer News: Oxlade-Chamberlain is a player Wenger must keep - Winterburn

ALEX OXLADE-CHAMBERLAIN is a player Arsenal must keep, according to former Gunners star Nigel Winterburn.

Steve Nicol says no reason for Chamberlain to leave Arsenal

Oxlade-Chamberlain’s future at Arsenal is uncertain with Chelsea keen to prise him away from the Emirates.

The Blues have endured a rocky start to the season and, despite bringing in four new faces, Antonio Conte wants more reinforcements.

On his list is a wing-back to provide competition for Victor Moses, who starred as Chelsea beat Tottenham to win the Premier League title last season.

However, Winterburn thinks Oxlade-Chamberlain’s performances in the past year make him a player that Arsene Wenger must retain at all costs.

He's definitely a player that Arsenal need to keep

“Everything coming out of Arsenal sounds like he's resisting signing a new contract,” he told Sky Sports.

“Is that because he's yet to be convinced he's going to play a large amount of games?

“I absolutely say he's a player who has made massive strides in the last season. At wing-back, I'd put him as Arsenal's outstanding player.

“Is that a position he wants to play regular though? Or does he want to play in centre-midfield? Or does he want to play in a more advanced area in behind a main striker?

“That's the position you have to look at in his general play. Then you have to look at the amount he's being offered.

Arsenal must keep Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, according to Nigel Winterburn

“Does he feel he's being offered less than some of the other players in the team that he's as important as?

“Since the end of last season his performances have been a very high level. He's definitely a player that Arsenal need to keep.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain has been at Arsenal since signing from Southampton in 2011.

The England international has won three FA Cup’s during his time in north london but is yet to be part of a title-winning side.
