England manager Gareth Southgate, who names his squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovakia later today, rang the Everton striker to invite him back into the international fold but was told that, after consultation with Everton boss Ronald Koeman, Rooney had decided to hang up his international boots.

“It was great Gareth Southgate called me to tell me he wanted me back in the England squad,” he said in a statement. “I really appreciated that.

“However, having already thought long and hard, I told Gareth that I had now decided to retire for good from international football. It is a really tough decision and one I have discussed with my family, my manager at Everton and those closest to me.”

The FA are keen to mark the service of a player who scored a record 53 goals in 119 appearances for England but will be guided by the players’ own wishes.
