Arsenal Transfer News: Arsene Wenger should have signed Jordan Pickford - Nigel Winterburn

ARSENAL should have tried to sign Jordan Pickford this summer, according to former Gunners left-back Nigel Winterburn.

Pickford excelled in his first full season as Sunderland’s No 1 last season, despite the Black Cats being relegated.

He was linked with a move to Arsenal but it was Everton who moved for him, with the Toffees signing him for £30million.

Winterburn believes Pickford has a bright future on the international stage and suggests he and Stoke’s Jack Butland are already ahead of Joe Hart in the pecking order for England.

And he admits he expected a bigger club, such as Arsenal, to be interested in Pickford.

I’m surprised Arsenal didn’t look at Jordan Pickford and try and buy him

“He’s a goalkeeper that I really like,” Winterburn said on Sky Sports.

“I’m surprised that some of the real big clubs, I’m surprised Arsenal didn’t look at him and try and buy him if I’m being totally honest.

“But maybe with him, I still see him at a big club now at Everton, who are going to sit higher up the league.

“Certainly there’s three goalkeepers that are going to be vying for that position.

“Hart is second or third at the moment but I think he will end up being the third choice for England, that’s for sure.”

Pickford has started the season strongly at Everton, helping them to a victory over Stoke and a draw with Manchester City.
