Arsenal were never in the game and found themselves 2-0 down after the first-half courtesy of goals from Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

The Gunners struggled to make much of an impact after the restart, despite the addition of Alexandre Lacazette and Olivier Giroud.

And the Reds put the Gunners to the sword, doubling their lead to 4-0 with efforts from Mohamed Salah and Daniel Sturridge.

The result prompted booing from the away fans and the familiar call of ‘Wenger out’ from the Arsenal supporters.

And when asked for his thoughts on the reaction from the travelling fans, Wenger could do little but apologise.

“I don’t want to answer that, that’s part of the crowd’s feelings,” he said.

“If I am the problem, I am sorry, but I believe all together we lose.

“The only thing we can do is come back and give them a better level of performance."

Celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan led the calls for Wenger to go on Twitter, calling the 4-0 defeat the worst performance he had ever seen.

"Worst Arsenal team and performance I've ever had the misery to endure. #WengerOut,” he wrote.

"Have finally defected to Wenger out brigade and seen the light. He is broken,” a fan added.

"I always trusted and respected AW but he needs to go. #WengerOut,” another wrote.
